The legend of Sphinx dates beyond the earliest recorded Egyptian history. It was a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human and was worshiped as a god because of its strength and wisdom. The earliest and most famous example, in the art form of this legend, is displayed in the colossal Great Sphinx of Giza, Egypt. It is believed to represent the god Horus, and pre-dates the 4th dynasty which began about 2700 B.C. It is represented to be a portrait statue of the king, and the Sphinx continued as a royal portrait type through most of Egyptian history.

The Memphis version of Sphinx is no legend. The pageantry of Carnival is reflected in its Grand Krewes and in turn, these Krewes’ activities are displayed in the promotion and support of their Queen. The Secret Society of Sphinx was certified as a Grand Krewe of Cotton Carnival in 1946. Many gracious Sphinx Queens have reigned during these years with their social activities being the focal point of many Krewe members. Substantial goals have been established for the upcoming year which place Sphinx in an enviable position that its loyal members have envisioned. In addition to its own innovative and aggressive schedule of events, Sphinx enthusiastically supports the efforts of Carnival in its promotion of Memphis business and industry.
